Welcome, Justin Burnsed, RESOLUTE’s New Head Brewer

We’ve added a Hooch Homie to our team! Like a proud mama bear emerging from the cave for spring, we’re pleased to show off our new cub, Head Brewer Justin Burnsed.

Justin made his way to the Centennial State in 2014, where he joined Mockery Brewing as its head brewer. There, he created more than 100 unique beers on a 15-bbl. system; since joining RESOLUTE, we’ve already had the pleasure of tapping some of his exciting creations – including a Wee Heavy and Rum Raisin Imperial Stout, with a new Session IPA, Strawberry Wheat Wine and Irish Red with rye and clover honey in the hopper.

Justin discovered his passion for craft beer while completing his undergrad at California State University, Chico. He frequented Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s original taproom during his time in college and began homebrewing shortly after he graduated. He soon decided to start making money where his mouth was, and pursue a career in brewing. He graduated from the University of California, Davis’ master brewers program, and enjoyed stints at Firehouse Brewing Co. in San Diego; Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, Calif.; and across the pond at BrewDog’s Fraserburgh brewery in Scotland. He was the head brewer and one of the founding partners of Prospectors Brewing in Mariposa, Calif., when the brewery opened in 2011.

Justin is a member of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, as well as London’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling. But those are all things you can read on his LinkedIn profile. Want to get to know the real Justin? We asked for five more fun facts – and he answered:

Q: What’s your favorite food to pair with beer?

A: Hands down, it would have to be dessert. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a fruity or chocolatey treat that was complimented perfectly by beer; chocolate pecan pie with a bourbon barrel imperial stout comes to mind.

Q: Name your favorite beer (that you didn’t make).

A: You had to go there didn’t you?!  That is by far the toughest question for me to answer. I’m going to go nostalgic and give you two: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was a gateway beer for me during college ($4 pitchers anyone!?), and Stone Arrogant Bastard was a game changer with its challenge that I wasn’t worthy enough to drink it. The latter is proof that brewing mistakes can turn into something special!

Q: We know you can brew a good beer, but what’s your hidden talent?

A: Back in the day I was known for taking whatever limited items that were in the cupboard/fridge and making something semi-gourmet out of them. In fact, I almost chose a career in cooking in lieu of brewing. I even had the name for my never-to-be cooking show on Food Network… “Pantry Raid!”

Q: If you were a beer, what style would you be, and why?

A: Probably a Saison. We are both of European descent. Its color can vary greatly (mine too based on sunshine levels); it can be stronger at times, but not overpowering. It’s not terribly bitter and balanced just enough. Stylistically it can be very accepting to a variety of interpretations, including wildness!

Q: What’s your go-to brewing jam? What really puts you in the zone?

A: Start playing the Led Zeppelin I album and just keep on going from there.

Stop in soon to clink a glass with Justin – and help us welcome our new brewer the RESOLUTE way!
